I belong in money spaces
A 22 year-old woman sees an advert for a Crowdfunding pitch event. She knows nothing about startups or how they raise money.
She’s only a year out of university, but she signs up anyway and decides to give it a go.
When she arrives, there aren’t many people that look like her. In a room of about 100 men, she spots less than five women, including her. She doesn’t understand it all. The jargon is completely new. Still, she decides that she belongs there anyway and takes her seat.
And when she makes her first crowdfunding investment, it’s a good thing that it’s a £10 minimum, because she doesn’t have a lot to spare, but she decides to invest anyway. Because it’s exciting to put money into something she believes in. To know she’s an investor, even if her stake is really small.
That woman is me. And that crowdfunding event was one of the first triggers for She’s Got Equity.
Introducing She’s Got Equity
As women, we’re taught to budget and save, but not to invest. When we think about giving back, we think about charity and philanthropy but not about how investing can be just as impactful. We’re taught that if we really cared, we’d be willing to do our work for free, instead of seeing the power of building wealth to shape the world we want to live in.
And even when we do try to build wealth, we find that financial language is exclusionary. And the language does exactly what it’s designed to do- it keeps people out. Even today, when on paper it’s easier than ever to invest, it still feels intimidating.
I remember asking my mum why she didn’t teach me some of the things I was learning about money, and her response: ‘I didn’t know myself.’ This isn’t an uncommon story.
I’ve spent the past few years working with underrepresented and underserved entrepreneurs and one thing I can confidently say is that the barriers to women building wealth are not a lack of talent.
And despite cultural myths, women are not bad with money. In fact, far from it. Several studies have shown that we make better investment decisions and the businesses we found have better outcomes.
The Manifesto
At She’s Got Equity, we believe that money isn’t just personal- it’s political, cultural and systemic.
That’s why we’re changing the narrative. Wealth isn’t a dirty word and wanting money doesn’t make you shallow, it’s how we build power.
And investing isn’t just for people in suits or for institutional investors. It’s for us.
We’re here to help women earn in ways that work for us. Own the things we create. Invest in what we believe in, and build new economies instead of begging for inclusion.
For the women who want to not just have money, but move it to shape industries, stories and futures.
We’re doing that through bold content that challenges existing narratives and pulls back the curtain on the gatekept world of money. With real stories and real numbers, so you can understand how to get your share.
